My Macnas Quilts

In 2020 I finished this scrappy beauty named Comfortable.

I had zero idea what would follow few years later. 

 

In August of 2022 I dug into the overflowing resource boxes and cut 2.5" strips to make another scrappy version of Comfortable.   

As usual, I cut more strips than were needed - so what was to be one project turned into two.  

The first project was named CAIM.  

The quilt was fully-finished in July, 2024.

(Caim - noun - an invisible circle of protection, drawn around the body with the hand, to remind one of being safe and loved, even in the darkest times - Scots Gaelic)

The second project was named MACNAS.  

In December, 2022, I used CAIM's leftover 2.5" x 4.5" green rectangles to make a two-color quilt.  

The top was finished in January 2023, and the series' namesake quilt was finished in April 2024.

(Macnas - an Irish word for playfulness)

Little did I know what this project would lead to!

A little while later, I decided to make two more quilts inspired by Macnas - - again, to USE the stash.  

The next in the new series was named REVERIE - it was introduced on the blog in May 2024.

In January 2023, planning for a "black and white version" began.  

Mid-summer 2024 TUXIE-TUDE became the next Macnas series project.

(Tuxie-Tude - a made-up word as an homage to Angel, our tuxedo cat, and to Lynne's Millie, the internet-famous tuxie cat)

The next in the series was named RUBRICATE and was introduced HERE.

(Vellichor - the beautiful wistfulness of used bookstores; the strange romance evoked by the scent of old books and paper)

In quick succession, more quilts joined what had clearly become a series.

WALLAROO features aboriginal fabrics and a consistent warm neutral.

(Wallaroo - is a common name for several species of moderately large macropods, intermediate in size between the kangaroos and the wallabies. The word "wallaroo" is from the Dharug walaru with spelling influenced by the words "kangaroo" and "wallaby" - from Wikipedia)

FANDANGO features random inserts of Cherrywood pieced segments.  The finished quilt's reveal post is HERE.

(Fandango - a vibrant and lively shade of purple with pink undertones, a part of the spectrum of magenta evoking a sense of creativity and fun)

GRANDIOSE features a range of aquas and chartreuse-greens.  You can see the finished quilt reveal HERE.

(The name comes from the selvage edge of the backing fabric - Grandiose by Philip Jacobs from the Kaffe Fassett Collective's Vintage line)

ENCHANTED features an array of yellow-orange-pink with black/white. 

(Enchanted - adj. - utterly delighted or captivated; fascinated, charmed, magical, or bewitched)

HANABI  features rectangles from my brights on black stash paired with colorful low volume fabrics. 

(Hanabi - Japanese word for fireworks)

MORNING FOG features a range of gentle blues paired with quiet low volumes. 

(Name inspired by an early morning photo of anchored sailboats in a calm lagoon)

PAINT PARTY was created in rainbow colors - you can read the quilt top's back story and reveal post here.

YUTORI completes the series of twelve quilts inspired by Macnas.  It features fabrics from the Kaffe Fassett Collective plus the alternate fabric from Loralei Designs.

(YUTORI - a Japanese word meaning to slow down simply to be, breathe, listen, and appreciate the richness and beauty of life and nature).

I made a bonus quilt with leftover rectangles from the series of quilts.

That bonus quilt is named HOLUS BOLUS (adverb meaning all at once; altogether).

And, in order to use up even more of the leftover/excess rectangles, I made three more bonus quilts:

RASTROPHILIOPUSTROCITY or RASTRO for short (noun meaning a spontaneous combustion of creative spark that is followed by action in order to manifest and bring into existence).  

GITHERMENTS (a random assortment of unmatching things).  Designed to use 300+ extra color rectangles from FANDANGO in the style of CAIM (see beginning of this post).  The top is waiting to be quilted.

And last but not least . . . 

MOTLEY (adjective - a mixture of often incongruous elements),  designed using the "Potato Chip Quilt"method, has been donated as a quilt top to Many Hands and Many Hearts.
