Logophile - the Quilt

This inspiration photo was taken in late 2019 during one of our then age-4 grandson's weekly visits to the public library (that's the children's area's glass house in the background - its background link is in one of the posts linked below).

In January 2020 I die cut a lot of 3" HSTs, their colors inspired by the photo (half KF Collective prints and half newsprint fabric from Carrie Bloomston's 2015 line called "Story").

THIS was my introductory post for the project that I named Logophile (a person who loves words).

The blocks were sewn and laid out on the design wall two years later (February 2022) based on a quilt top made by Red Pepper Quilts.

But at that point I didn't think the layout worked with the vision I had in my head, so I came up with this layout instead.

And then the top went into the "waiting to be quilted" closet.

After a lot of time had passed, with at least three backing fabric swap outs, this happened.

And now, at long last, Logophile is a finished quilt.

Quilted in liberated all-over nested spiral fans using Glide thread in Pink Rose.

The quilt measures 64" x 64" which is the perfect size for it to become one of our Kitchen Table Quilts.

The 5" borders and the binding are from a 2019 fabric by Dan Morris for QT fabrics.

As soon as DH finishes the final few touches to the kitchen window he replaced this week, I'll take Brumous off the table and let Logophile begin its inaugural turn on the table.

Progress Comes in Many Forms

I did manage to get two more blocks sewn for Dumpster Diving 12 - Confetti, but not until Wednesday afternoon.

While the iron was on, I pressed the various sections for January's dining room wall quilt - Gnomeville.  

As it turned out, the panel I thought I would add to widen the backing is not going to be needed so it will become a runner on its own.

I spent a morning sorting already-cut strips for January's new kitchen table quilt named Brumous (adjective meaning "of gray skies and winter days").

There will be sixty-four 8" (finished) blocks in the 64" x 64" quilt, hence the stack of plated strips.

In other news, DH hung up the artisan-made lavender Icelandic glass star that the kids give me for my birthday last month.   (They brought it home with them earlier in the year after their adventure in Iceland)

October and November are the months for a number of annual doctor appointments - so far all of my test results have been good.  

Two more to go - fingers crossed that the run of "good results" continues.

No Sewing Update

Unfortunately, I DID get the knock-you-flat-cold that DH had.  

I'm up and moving again, albeit not as much as usual, and both of us are dealing with an annoying, lingering cough.

I haven't been in the studio since before I posted last - hopefully that will change this week.

Merry and Bright - December Kitchen Table Quilt

Two years after this project began,

Merry and Bright, the twelfth of twelve monthly 

kitchen table quilts is finished and ready for use.

I used to design this quilt's top.

I took this photo outdoors before the quilt was laundered.

I am SO glad I went ahead and changed 

to this whole cloth backing.

And I do love the striped binding.

(not my usual Michael Miller Clown Stripe but a version

that is a bit narrower - maker unknown)

Quilted with liberated triple echoed orange peels

using Glide in German Granit.

and unpacking our Christmas things . . .

November Kitchen Table Quilt - Sweater Weather

November's kitchen table quilt is named Sweater Weather.

(no full shots because of the gusty wind and

 the fast moving sun/clouds)

I am so glad that I went with this backing.

It couldn't be more perfect.

Quilted with liberated all-over fans

using Glide thread in Sienna.

(our first frost is likely by the weekend -

then the leaves will really start coming down

and it will be time to clean up the fading plants)

Trick or Treat - October's Kitchen Table Quilt

Trick or Treat will be on our kitchen table this month.

It measures 63" x 63"

This is the scrappy back anchored by this seasonal panel.

Quilted with liberated all-over fans

using Glide thread in Burnt Orange.

Back flipped to front.

Front flipped to back.

I am SO glad I bought this deep-toned Jason Yenter print 

even though I had no particular purpose in mind because

it turned out to be perfect as T or T's sashing and border.

Merry and Bright - the Flimsy

Merry and Bright is now a quilt top.

I used the 3-hour Baby Gingham Quilt design -

a free download from the Fat Quarter Shop,

enlarging it to suit my needs.

The top is currently 65" x 65"

(this will be December's kitchen table quilt)

That's the backing on the left 

along with a strip of the binding fabric.

I feel MUCH better having the twelfth

kitchen table quilt at this stage.

FMQ will happen in plenty of time

for this to go on the table Dec. first.

The Next Few Weeks

I plan to spend the next few weeks

crossing a few more to-do items off my list.

First will be this set of five utility mats for October.

Second will be a set of five for November.

I have cut the fabrics for December's set

but have to wait until I pin baste the next two quilts*

so I can trim their leftover batting pieces to size.

*Trick or Treat, October's kitchen table quilt

will be quilted/finished this month

and Sweater Weather, November's KTQ

will be right behind it.

Merry and Bright, December's KTQ

is cut out and ready to sew together.

I bought this yardage to make two pillowcases for Little Man.

He loves asteroids/outer space and wants to grow up

to be an astronaut who is also a volcanologist.

(volcanoes are also very high on his interest list -

as are mermaids and the ocean)

The last of the October yardage

mixed with a couple of stash fabrics

will become another pillowcase for him.

Ditto for the last of the November yardage.

I'll use the remaining yardage from Merry and Bright 

to make two December pillowcases.

This pile contains the makings of eight XL (Artist) 

lined drawstring gift bags now waiting to be sewn together.

This stack contains the pieces and parts 

for nine of the XXL (Laundry - the biggest one) gift bags.

Side Note:  My idea to work by size rather than color

is making the cutting out process MUCH easier -

hoping it will be the same for the sewing side.

(next month will be the L and M sizes)

Then there is the matter of making a liberated bird

for Lynne's student bird quilt project.

And the list goes on and on . . .

quite as often for the next few weeks.

Farmland - September’s Kitchen Table Quilt

Farmland is finished!

64" x 64" 

September's kitchen table quilt was quilted 

with Glide thread in Military Gold (top)

and a wide variety of neutral Glide threads

in bobbins leftover from previous FMQ projects.

I used multiple FMQ motifs including organic lines,

both straight and wavy, my liberated all-over fans, and

a lot of letting the fabrics inspire the quilted lines.

(a single all-over design just did not

suit the inspiration concept of patchwork 

farm fields as seen from the air . . . )

The quilted texture is wonderful on the front -

but hardly shows at all on the back.

I am very happy with the way Farmland came together.

After a trip through the washer/dryer 

to enhance the quilted texture,

Farmland will take up residence 

on our kitchen table later today.

Sweater Weather - the Flimsy

November's Kitchen Table Quilt has reach flimsy status.

The top currently measures 67" x 67" 

not including the not-yet-squared-corner-extras.

Once FMQ is completed sometime in October,

 I'll square the quilt to 64" x 64"

September's Kitchen Table Quilt is up for FMQ this week.

October's Kitchen Table Quilt is ready to FMQ in September.

And now November's KTQ is ready for its turn in October.

December's KTQ will feather a whole cloth top

and a giant four-patch backing - 

I hope to work on both during September/October

so it will be ready to FMQ in November.
