The bare spot on the wall is no longer empty!

Taking Flight 

is finished!!

Original design

featuring

batik blocks sent to me last November by Sue

and

orphaned free pieced letters by Lynne.

Quilted by Margaret Gunn.

All photos will supersize for more detail.

When Lynne wrote a tutorial last year

for her free pieced butterfly,

I had to try making one.

After that,

one thing led to another!

The tutorial suggested tossing certain tiny trimmings.

Did I?

No.

I set them aside to play with later.

Those small scraps became two cubist butterflies

enhanced with a few Swavorski hot fix crystals.

along the butterfly's flight path!

I just had to add stategically-placed sparkles

throughout the center panel . . .

Taking Flight - The Flimsy Upgrade

Taking Flight (the flimsy) has been upgraded.

I finally listened to "that little voice," 

adding the narrow KF inner border and

2.5" yellow batik outer borders.

MUCH better!

I decided on a backing fabric, too.

The upgraded flimsy measures 37" wide x 51" long.

NOW this one is ready for quilting.

One day soon, Taking Flight will hang on the wall in my studio.

Taking Flight - the Flimsy

Taking Flight 

has reached flimsy status!

It measures 33" wide x 46" long.

The outer border batik blocks

were pieced by Magpie Sue

as part of a swap she and I shared last year.

The letters spelling PLAY

were pieced by Lynne

and chosen from the gathering

of orphans and orts

she sent to me last year.

(THANK YOU!)

The wonky HSTs were leftover

after I made Amish Strings.

The butterfly at the top is my first-ever

made using Lynne's tutorial.

The cubist butterflies in the lower panel

are the utterly random

and completed unplanned

result of playing with the 

trimmed off wing bits.

Here is where the finished quilt will eventually hang.

Play Time

Over the weekend,

I moved my second machine into the design studio

so I could work PLAY from that design wall.

By the end of the day,

I had this central panel pieced and pressed!

Four orphan letters from Lynne,

a bit of pale batik from my stash,

leftover wonky HST segments from Amish Strings,

my first free pieced butterfly,

and the wonky "discards" panel.

WOOT!

Before I went to bed,

I had arranged the swap blocks

from Magpie Sue around the outside.

Now it is time to wait and see

how those borders evolve.

Oh ~ the possibilities!
