Seasonal Scraps

In that same now-emptied project box, 

were these bits and pieces from 

Dumpster Diving IV - The Christmas Edition

and Feliz Navidad. 

With a bit of stitching and trimming,

they became this scrappy slab.

The slab was squared up into a rectangle

and prepared for quilting.

The finished piece measures 11" wide x 22.25" long.

Quilted with Glide thread in Apple

using long liberated wavy lines.

A bit of leftover red and white striped binding finished it off.

Four scrappy squares from the making of

The Kitchen Door quilt turned into this 8" x 8" mug mat.

Backed with the last of this loud but fun print

and bound with the last of this leftover binding.

Four scrappy projects finished

with one more to share on Friday.

The remaining scraps in the box

have been sorted into eight color groups

and will be used to make my

Instructor Showcase sample

for my JCCFS class in September.

Dumpster Diving IV - The Christmas Edition

also known as 'Tis the Season

was actually finished the last week of December.

Since then we've had soggy gray days

which are not great for outdoor photography.

Saturday we actually had sunshine and blue skies

so I hurried outside to get these photos.

This is the quilt's back - and it is scrappy, of course.

I used Glide thread in Khaki (top and bobbin)

and quilted long wavy vertical lines

in every other column of segments.

I had originally thought I'd use 

a green stripe for binding but 

this black and white was a much better choice.

So now there are four Dumpster Diving quilts

(click the link above to see photos - with links to their reveal posts)

with a fifth in the early stages of construction

and a sixth in the very early planning stage.

SO many possibilities!

November Recap for 18 in 2018

Someday is Now (shown above) 

is the last project on my

18 in 2018 Piecing List.

I haven't touched it in the past week

as I've been finishing two shop sample tops.

I have quilted eighteen quilts since January

so I'm calling my Quilting List DONE.

And I've finished with the comfort quilts for this year

so I'm also calling that list DONE.

* * *

Over the next few days I hope to

get my Colorwash 360 top sewn together

and a scrappy back stitched together for

Dumpster Diving 4 - The Christmas Edition.

Beyond that, I also have four quilts that need sleeves.

Once I get the sleeves made 

I can hand stitch them in place

during our Wednesday morning

quilt group gatherings.

And I really do want to get 

the top for Someday is Now

assembled before the end of December . . .

Dumpster Diving 4 (The Christmas Edition) - The Flimsy

Once all fifty top-to-bottom strips 

were sewn together, this is what

the unpressed backside looked like.

After quality time with the iron,

I pinned the freshly-pressed 

but still untrimmed top

 on the design wall.

There were two more 68" lengths

left in the remains of the uber-long string

so I'll add those to the right side of the top

before squaring the top and bottom edges.

Here's a close up of the sewn-together top

so you can enjoy the scrappy holiday goodness.

Since the objective is to use up

the overabundant stash of holiday fabrics,

I'll use this mix of half-yards or less

to create a scrappy backing.

A red plaid binding with 

a black-and-white-striped flange

should finish things off nicely.

Maybe this one will be done

in time to enjoy it yet this year!

Dumpster Diving 4 (The Christmas Edition) Takes Shape

There's been some serious power sewing

happening over the last few days.

Scraps were paired 

then paired again leader ender style

as I pieced the blocks

for two class sample quilt tops.

The resulting pairs were paired yet again 

so the segments were long enough to chain piece 

end-to-end without interruption.

By Thanksgiving afternoon it was time 

to press that long LONG strip.

(the quilt in the background 

is one that Wanda made/quilted)

The uber-LONG strip was sub-cut 

into approx. 66" lengths which

are now pinned to the design wall.

There are fifty strips.

They'll each finish at 1" wide.

Here's a close up so you can see the wide variety

of prints in this glorious holiday mashup.

Next step will be to start sewing these together . . .

After even more tweaking,

THIS is the final layout 

for my colorwash quilt top.

(shown here with each square

securely pinned on the design wall)

And later in the week,

this is how that same design wall looked.

All 285 squares are now safely clipped together

and ready to sew when time permits.

It feels so good to reach this point in the process.

I had a bit of time to work on blocks 

for my next LQS class sample (January 2019)

and I used these bits and pieces as leader-enders.

The contents of this box,

along with another huge stack of pinned pairs,

will slowly but surely become 

Dumpster Diving 4.0 aka 'Tis the Season.

(actual design still to be decided)

The quilt will not be ready for use this year

but these pieces WILL become a quilt top 

before year end.

And with a few minutes of stitching here and there

over the past few weeks,

all of the kaleidoscope centers for 

Someday is Now

(inspired by Sujata Shah's Organized Chaos design)

are sewn and laid out on the design wall.

I've added corners and sewn the first two rows together.

Only six more rows to go . . .

Little Man will be here this weekend

for his monthly sleepover visit

and I don't know about you,

but I cannot believe Thanksgiving

is happening next week!
