This was my 2020 Rainbow Scrap Challenge project.

I made two blocks each month January-October

loosely following Angela's color prompts.

Each of the blocks was quilted using

one of twenty different colors of Glide thread.

(you can read all of the previous posts

for this quilt using the label for Dumpster Diving 11

below the quotation at the bottom of this post)

I saved the excess binding from Spotty Town - 

and there was just enough to use on Mischief Maker.

(just enough = less than 8" leftover)

This is the second of the quilt's corners.

This is the third corner.

And this is the fourth corner.

The colorful birds were absolutely the right choice.

(one consistent bobbin thread was used)

I know that I've declared Mischief Maker

to be the end of my Dumpster Diving series . . . 

but that does not mean I'll stop playing with 

the boxes of leftover 1.5" scrappy strips.

There will be enough, even after the six Etcetera quilts,

to make lots of different kinds of utility mats.

Because, in the end, these little bits and pieces 

are just so much fun to work with and,

when sewn together, have so much impact.

Next Up for FMQ - Dumpster Diving 11 - Mischief Maker

Next up for FMQ is Dumpster Diving 11,

the final quilt in my series.

Since this photo was taken,

I have unstitched the border strips

and stay stitched the outer edges instead.

Here's the plan for my FMQ . . . sans the border strips.

These are the threads I'll use.

Keep in mind this character was the inspiration

for this quilt's name . . . 

Over time, I have fallen out of love 

with this scrappy pieced backing

for this particular quilt.

So when Lynne went shopping last weekend

and texted me photos of a possible backing

for her almost finished Allegretto quilt top,

I knew instantly that it would also be

PERFECT to back DD 11-Mischief Maker.

Her shop didn't have enough yardage for both of us

so the shop owner told Lynne she'd reorder the fabric

and call me once the bolt arrived.

Given the uncertainty of timing and availability

I went online Sunday and found the 2007 fabric

with enough still in stock to back Mischief Maker.

The macaws, toucans, cockatoos, parrots,

peacocks, and parakeets/budgies literally flew cross country

 from CA, landing at my house Wednesday evening.

After the requisite trip through 

the washer and dryer . . .

And this freshly pressed back meant

 it was time to . . . 

. . . pin baste Mischief Maker.

I am so excited about this turn of events.

quilt top/back in the waiting-to-be-quilted-closet.

(numbers 7, 8, 9, and now 11 -

number 10's long long strip of segments

 is my current leader-ender effort)

My new roll of batting has been shipped

so one of these days I'll be able to start sharing 

more finishes and photoshoots.

Dumpster Diving 11 - Mischief Maker - Blocks Completed

This month's Rainbow Scrap Challenge color is YELLOW

so I made my two monthly blocks in yellows and golds.

Their completion means the blocks for 

Dumpster Diving 11 - Mischief Maker are done.

All that's left now is to sew all 20 blocks together.

WOOT!

I shared part of the quilt's name inspiration

in a previous post (click HERE).

This Quippy Cup is the other part.

Purchased at a local arts fair two years ago,

it lives on one of the floating shelves 

directly in front of where I sit and sew.

These are the backing fabrics for DD 11.

And these characters are two from a full panel

that will be pieced into DD 11's backing

because I think they're awesome

and they surely look like they're

Dumpster Diving 11's September Blocks

My colors for September's RSC blocks - red and brown.

Brown?!?  

Yes - brown.

Not dull and boring browns

but warm and comforting tones with

sparks of pizazz mixed in for good measure

Red - what can I say.

Strong, cheerful, vibrant and more.

Here are the two slabs prior to being trimmed into 12.5" squares.

And here are the newest squares with the other 16 blocks.

Only two more blocks to go . . . 

When I was casting about for a name for Dumpster Diving 11,

I chanced across this children's book about a noisy  parrot

and DD 11's name instantly became Mischief Maker. 

Once the quilt is finished

Little Man and I will cuddle under it while

we read all about Papagayo, the Mischief Maker.

For those who have read posts here for a while,

you are already aware that my "new year" 

begins in August.

Early signs of season change

mixed with back to school sales

trigger my need to revisit existing plans

and plan out future projects.

This year is no different

in terms of the "annual triggers" 

although I can honestly say

I have not done any "back to school" 

stockpiling what with staying at home.

Here's a recap of the key plans.

ONE

The biggest decision I've made 

with regard to existing project plans is

to to put my Kitchen Table Quilt project

on hold until April-May of next year.

I had planned to photograph each finished quilt

outdoors on our round patio table

during its month so there would be

seasonal context and a changing background.

That plan ended earlier this year

when COVID turned things upside down, 

younger son decided to move home,

and the renovations began.

TWO

Speaking of renovations -

DH has completed the installation of the floor!

Next step is to clean up no longer needed tools, etc.

and then he'll start installing baseboards.

We're all seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.

THREE

A while back I added a page on the blog

for some of the HST quilts I've made.

At the bottom of that page

there's a list of ten more HST quilts

that are currently underway.

Some are actually cut out and ready to sew

and one is almost a top ready to back.

I'll be sharing posts for those

later in the fall or early next year.

I've also been doing some planning 

for next year's Rainbow Scrap Challenge.

For now, I've chosen three projects

that will use scraps, 

fabrics from the resource boxes,

and occasional yardage.

(gotta use that stash)

SCRUMMY ("delectable, splendid") 

will feature scrappy baskets, 

something I've wanted to do for a long time.

(one 15" basket block per month for 12 months)

SPOT ON ("exactly correct, on-target") 

will revisit Moments in Time from Quilty 365 v1.

(twenty 4" blocks per month for 10 months)

JOVIAL ("high spirited merriment") 

 inspired by the Scrap Snap Quiltalong shared by Kari V.

(eight 6" blocks per month for 10 months)

 We'll see how things progress.

Dumpster Diving 11-Mischief Maker - July's Monthly Update

Here is where things stood a couple of weeks ago

 with Dumpster Diving 11 - Mischief Maker.

Twelve blocks made with eight more to go.

You may have noticed the blue vinyl table corner 

in several of my recent photos - this is how it looks 

with some of the items from the Christmas corner 

stored underneath.

 

(they'll leave once the renovations are done)

The table is one DH and I use for 

stretching and at-home PT.

(normally it is out from the design wall

by a foot or so - it sits in the open space

between the wall and my cutting table)

Here is my "dark blue" block for July.

(the colorful seaweed-y print is the almost very last

of a fabric purchased for one of my very first quilts)

And here is my "brights on black" block for July.

I absolutely LOVE this mish mash riot of colors.

And then there were fourteen blocks on the design wall.

(newest two pinned on point atop the others

since it's too hard to reach higher 

and there's no room to go lower right now)

Going forward there will be 

a block with yellows and one with golds.

There will be a block with reds 

and a block with warm browns.

And there will be a block with red violets 

and one with blue violets.

By the end of October 

all twenty blocks should be finished.

THEN it will be time to get them 

laid out (4 x 5) and sewn together.

Reality Sinks In

These are my 12.5" June RSC blocks for 

Dumpster Diving 11 - Mischief Maker.

The colors are a bit darker 

than they are in real life.

Must have been the lighting . . . 

Darker pinks with splashes of other colors.

And a mix of lavenders and lighter purples

with plenty of other colors to add interest.

The color for July is dark blues.

I made light blue and medium/bright blue

blocks earlier in the year.

This month I'll use these brights on black

scraps to make one of my blocks.

And I'll use these darker blues

that lean to blue-violet for the second one.

Now about reality sinking in . . .

I had hoped that I'd be able to post regularly

through the major renovation/upgrade 

of our bonus room as it becomes 

younger son's new living quarters.

But with the intensity of effort involved for all of us,

those regular postings are not likely to happen.

Two walls have had their  

30-year old wallpaper removed

and the new paint color is ready to test.

A section of carpet has been removed

and the area of sub-floor to be leveled 

has been determined.

The choice of new "hardwood" flooring 

hasn't been made just yet, 

but is in the works.

One of the two closets has been emptied,

painted, updated with new lights,

and is back in action once again.

The second closet is FULL (!) of elder son's

sound design equipment along with a few boxes

of stuff from high school and before.

It will be emptied by us 

and hopefully dealt with by elder son. 

(who is in the midst of a DIY

master bath remodel at his house)

And so it goes . . .

On the computer front,

I have most everything up and running now

with only a few more large document files

still being transferred from the old to the new.

My new monitor arrived today -

I can't wait to get things properly connected

so we can dismantle the

temporary table/second workstation -

and things can settle into a new normal routine.
