Colorful Crumbs - The Quilt

I started this quilt project in 2016

as part of that year's Rainbow Scrap Challenge.

At long last, it is completely finished.

Colorful Crumbs measures 48" wide x 56" long.

Here it is looking from the other end.

The quilting motifs were inspired by photos in

Cindy Griselda's Artful Improv book.

If you look closely at the Baptist Fans in the colorful rows,

you can see that I started with the green row

but shifted to my own more curvy version in the other rows.

I also started out using a ruler for the black and white rows

with linear stitching -- but that lasted for 1.5 rows.

I put the ruler away and went with 

what Angela Walters calls "straight-ish" lines.

They seemed to fit the scrappy nature of the quilt 

more than the precise ruler-guided lines.

The backing fabric came from Sew Many Ideas in Jackson, TN.

I bought it long before I knew how I'd use it -

just because it was such a bright and happy mix of colors.

Needless to say, I am delighted to have this one completed.

Pin Basting, Labels, and Teaching

The first photos I took of this project

are dated October 2016.

It is long past time for Colorful Crumbs to be quilted.

I have spent FAR too many hours

debating with myself about how to quilt this one.

There are 8 color rows and 9 black and white rows

which means there are at least that many possibilities.

Should I choose 17 different designs

and let this become a stitch sampler?

NO

(too hard to keep the stitch density 

anywhere close to even)

Should I do fancy stitching in the color rows

and something simple in the B-W rows?

NO

(the scrappy crumb piecing 

doesn't need to be obliterated

by a lot of overbearing thread work)

AHA!!

I need to do something consistent in the color rows

using coordinating colors of thread 

and put the fancier stitching 

in the single fabric B-W rows!

But what to stitch?

After yet more time spent looking through my books,

I have chosen two new-to-me designs

and one that I've used before

In an unexpected turn of events -

I have been engaged to teach 

at the newest of our local quilt shops

Fabric for the Flock

during the month of June.

I'll be teaching the Half-a-Log Cabin 

to a 3-session daytime group and 

a 3-session evening group.

The fabrics shown above 

will become my summery sample quilt.

So . . . 

All quilting and piecing on my own projects

will be taking a temporary back seat 

while I get the class sample pieced and quilted 

so it can be hung in the shop ASAP

to help fill the classes.

And just as an FYI,

I have reinstated my Blogger post label gadget.

 (look for it at the bottom of the sidebar)

It was in the sidebar for years 

but I removed it when Blogger's search box

started working better and because

my labels were in a complete muddle.

I'm in the process of cleaning up old labels

and I've started adding a new label

for each calendar year's finishes.

There's lots more work to be done

but at least I've gotten started.

Colorful Crumbs - The Flimsy

This is the upper portion of the top.

This is the lower portion.

Once quilted,

the width will be narrowed

to balance out the overall length.

Anticipated finished size 

 46" x 58"

This one will be fun to quilt!

Putting It Together - Colorful Crumbs

Over the weekend I was able to spend

a little bit of time in the studio.

Step one was to cut 3.5" setting strips

from the previously pulled 

black and whites.

Step two was to start at the top 

of the design wall and begin stitching 

setting strips to the 4.5" color band rows.

From two rows of color to four . . .

Yes!

Colorful Coins - An Update

Here and there,

a few scraps at a time,

I have been stitching.

Pinks

Yellows/golds

Oranges

Reds

A week or so ago,

the pile of blue scraps/crumbs

were pieced together.

(many of these were from RSC 2016)

Then the yellows/golds were combined,

the orange column was added onto,

and a green column was created.

(backing fabric on the left)

When purple joined the party,

I decided to see what happened

if I turned the columns into rows.

I like this a lot.

Next up?

One final color group

featuring lots of

blue-green and turquoise 

scraps/crumbs

and then this final RSC 2016 project

will be ready for assembly.

I have considered at least 

a gazillion options for using these 

Chinese Coin-style columns/rows.

But then "it" dawned on me.

I could do a lot of things

but I don't want to.

So these rows will continue to be

all-about-the-scrappy-colors 

set using a variety of 

black-on-white sashings.
