Woolgathering - the Quilt

This is Woolgathering - my first "finish" of 2022.

You can read about its backstory HERE.

(and if you look at the round table
to the left of the rocking chair,
you can see the offcuts turned into
one of January's utility mats)

No outdoor beauty shots for now.
(sleet, wind, below-freezing temps)

Besides, the quilt is already hard at work.

My low back sciatica has reared its head again
so Tylenol, a heating pad, and the recliner have been
my constant companions for the last couple of days -
with Woolgathering keeping me warm.

Quilted with elongated orange peels
using Glide thread in Warm Grey 4.

Backing - Tim Holtz Eclectic Elements
Memoranda PWTH 091 Tickets

50" x 60"

As soon as things settle down again
the Seuss quilt is waiting for its turn
to spend some quality time with Max.

Welcome January

DH and I both grew up with deep snowy winters,
ice skating and ice fishing, sledding
building snowmen, and lots of bulky winter clothes.

The utility mats for this month feature the end cuts
and other leftover segments from Woolgathering,
which will be quilted and finished soon.

Snowflakes that stay on your nose and eyelashes . . .

Silver white winters that melt into spring . . .

In the dining room we have
four sweater-clad gnomes to watch over us.

This is the White Flower Farm amaryllis.

There will be four blooms in all.

When the light hits the petals just right
they sparkle - and the deep ruby throat
doesn't show much in this photo but it is
rich and wonderful in person.

(yes, the plant has been moved to my computer table)

This planter of three bulbs continues to amaze me.

There will be eleven blooms in all
with a twelfth bud blooming in water.

(it broke off when we moved the Christmas tree)

If you look at the scene outside the window,
you can see that winter here is VERY different
than what we had growing up
and why we call this "khaki" season.

(but January still counts as a good time
to enjoy a mug of tea or hot chocolate)

Woolgathering - the Flimsy

This is Woolgathering.

(Noun - indulgence in aimless thought
or dreamy imagining)

I discovered a project box of 3.5" low volume strip sets
cut eons ago for a long-forgetten project,
but instead of setting them aside for later
I took a detour and turned them into this quilt top.

As with many low volume quilts, Woolgathering will be
at its best when being used in the recliner.

I used the Two by Four tutorial by Film in the Fridge
re-sizing her dimensions for my wider strips.

I only had to choose/cut five additional pairs
of fabrics beyond what was in the box.

Here's another "crumpled" photo of the flimsy.

I'll use this Tim Holtz Eclectic Elements
"Memoranda" yardage (left) for the backing and a
long-long-stashed cobblestone print for binding.

FMQ for Woolgathering will happen
sooner instead of later since we use
all of our low volume quilts in January
after the holiday items are packed away.
