Autumn Splendor - The Pillow Party

When all was said and done,

I made thirteen autumnal pillows.

Each top was pieced and quilted.

I cut more leftover fabric from the resource boxes

to serve as the pillow backs -

envelope style.

Each pillow was then bound with leftover binding

and when I ran out of suitable leftovers,

I made another nine WOF strips into binding

for the final five pillows.

Thirteen pillows times four corners each

equals fifty-two mitered corners.

That's a lot of binding!

This particular pillow is my "favorite' of the group.

I love the backing, the background behind the tree,

the binding, and the way the tree floats above its setting.

These three pillows are in the sunroom recliner

where DH likes to sit and listen to his audio books

or watch streaming videos on his tablet.

These four reside on the right-hand end of our couch,

while these four live on the left-hand end.

And the final two pillows are in my recliner.

Plan B for the Trees

As I mentioned in the previous post,

I was not happy with the improv tree blocks

and the way they didn't play nicely together.

That said,  I've now moved on to Plan B.

What is Plan B you ask?

Using the eight blocks I liked best

to make seasonal pillow covers!

I dug through the orange and yellow resource boxes 

to find fabrics for wide borders and

backs for the envelope style covers.

Leftover batting scraps were cut to size and

I used the pea green solid as the 3d layer 

for each pillow's quilt sandwich.

Several lengths of leftover bindings in autumn colors

meant I would not need to make any new binding.

Win - Win - Win

Working one by one, I added borders to the tree blocks

so they were large enough for the various pillow forms.

Each pillow's sandwich was quilted with vertical wavy lines

(think falling leaves)

using Glide thread in Bark and Military Gold.

And then the trimming and binding process began . . .

These are the first three finished pillows.

There are five more tree-top pillows to finish

and another five scrappy tops to piece,

sandwich, quilt, and bind.

Hopefully I'll have photos of the entire group

in another day or so.

Autumn Splendor - Another Squirrel Project

Last week Preeti of SewPreetiQuilts 

shared her All Spruced Up finish.

I commented and she replied

and one thing led to another.

I've wanted to make one of Amy's tree quilts for a long time

and I decided there is no time like THIS FALL.

So I pulled out my resource boxes of orange and yellow.

It didn't take very long to come up with

 twelve rather eclectic pairs.

I used bits and pieces from my brown crumb box

to add a different trunk to each of the sets.

But for my quilt, 

which will be slightly smaller than the tutorial's,

I need 25 pairs of fabrics, not twelve.

So I opened up the green and gold resource boxes . . .

I had an easy time choosing thirteen sets of green and gold 

and more bits and pieces of brown for trunks.

Since this will be a scrappy stash-buster quilt,

I looked for larger pieces of leftover backings

and aging yardage to create a scrappy back.

The three on the left will form the back

and the herringbone piece on the right

will make a terrific binding.

As time permits, I'll start cutting the requisite parts

for this totally unplanned but long overdue 

Squirrel Club project with a goal

to start making the blocks in early October.

With any luck at all, 

AUTUMN SPLENDOR 

will a finished quilt 

to enjoy before the leaves from our trees 

have fallen to the ground.
