Moments in Time - the flimsy / quilt top

56" wide x 72" long

There are 192 daily circles in my quilt top

created between November 2015 and April 2016

as part of Audrey's Quilty 365.

(see link in sidebar and/or on my 

Quilt Alongs and Online Groups page tab above)

So many previous quilts are represented in these scrappy circles

along with circles cut from fabrics shared by a goodly number of friends.

All of the background blues came from my stash,

and most have been used in at least one previous quilt.

Next up will be piecing a scrappy back

using fabrics leftover from previous quilt backs.

Thank you, Audrey -- what a great quilt along idea --

and to those who are continuing on for another six months,

here's to even more circular scrappy goodness!

Assembly Continues

Instead of pinning all 192 squares onto the design wall

(to prevent accidental fluttering to the floor)

I chose to pin the four rows of each sixteen patch together.

Three sixteen patches are stitched and pressed.

Rows for the next three sixteen patches are stitched and pressed.

(the groups that hang straight)

The groupings for the final six sixteen patches

are pinned and waiting.

It may be a few days before this scene changes.

There are geraniums, coleus, zinnias, 

dracaena spikes, dusty miller, and mosquito plants 

that need to be nestled into their back yard pots for the summer.

And this is the week I'm headed to Paducah.

I'll be in the Author's Showcase area Thursday at 11 AM

and wandering the show the rest of the day.

I'll also be on the lookout for Lynne's two quilts -

 Too Much Chicken and The Black and White Crayons 

I'll post again on Saturday.

The Layout Process Begins

Last night I spent an hour or so randomly putting 

my Quilty 365 blocks on the design wall.

It wasn't long until the whole thing started

swimming in front of my eyes.

So I took them down and started again.

It didn't take long to realize I DID want 

to use my previously contemplated plan for a

dark - light - dark - light background arrangement.

Pinning my 108" tape measures in place

also created sixteen patch markers.

(another way to keep my head from exploding)

I wasn't going to do any stitching,

but as you can see I did sew two sets of sixteen blocks.

Like creating one of Sujata's freeform rail fence quilt tops,

I can now happily piece my circles into sixteen patch blocks

and not have to deal with all 192 four-inch blocks at the same time.

I love it when a long contemplated project reaches this point!

Moments in Time 173-196

I started making my circles for Quilty 365 on November 10, 2015.

I named my version Moments in Time.

I gave up trying to keep them in chronological order early in the process.

Instead I simply enjoyed creating the combinations.

My goal is a quilt top 12 squares wide x 16 squares long.

That meant I needed to make 192 squares/circles.

I ended up making 196. 

The extras will not go to waste.

Now it is time to get them all up on the design wall

and see what happens next!

Moments in Time 152-172

I have gotten way behind on my Quilty 365 project.

I've been cutting circles and pinning them to background squares,

but I hadn't stitched them down for several weeks.

This week, that is going to change.

My version of the project was to create six month's worth

of daily circles using fabric scraps from the stash

and projects worked on along the way.

Actually, it was kind of fun having so many pairs

pinned and stacked and waiting to be stitched . . .

One circle at a time, I am catching up again.

I'll have the rest of my circles ready to share on Wednesday.

Then it will be time to play with layout ideas!

Moments in Time - 14 More

Fabrics in these circles came from 

Cherie in St. Louis and Judy in Michigan.

(plus one circle from my stash)

Two of these came from Judy

and the other two scrappy circles are from

ongoing projects.

The upper left circle came from one of my ER gowns,

the upper right circle came from Cherie,

the lower left is a scrappy conglomeration,

and the lower right came from Judy.

These two came from my stash.

This is the sum total of my stitching for the week.

I wanted to do more, but the body just wasn't ready.

I've had my follow up appointment with the ortho doctor -

diagnosis is degenerative disc disease (lumbar) mixed with arthritis.

(I suspected as much since this combo already exists in my neck)

I start three weeks of PT later today.

Thinking positive thoughts -- PT has always helped before.

Moments in Time (Nos. 131-137)

Thankfully I had these seven circles

stitched and photographed early last week.

Why?

I am just home after 4 long days/nights in the hospital

necessitated by a nasty case of infectious colitis.

 Recovery will take at least another week or two.

Moments in Time - Nos. 110-130

The next 20 Quilty 365 circles

have been cut and machine appliquéd in place.

They include circles cut pieces

gathered during my recent Scrap 101 class scrap swap

and a few others from my own scrap bins.

There are several circles cut from 

scraps from my Yellow Quilt project.

I included one with Valentine hearts

and another with a fussy cut red chair from the 

backing used for The Kitchen Door Quilt.

Moments In Time (83 - 109) and Monthly Link Up

Here are the most recent circles

for my Quilty 365 project --

Moments in Time

Some of these fabrics came from my scrap stash.

Others came from leftover quilt backing.

There are a few mixed in with this post's assortment

that came from new scraps pulled

out of a big pile of fabrics

donated to the Wednesday quilt group.

There are two cut from an orphan string block

leftover after assembling the top of Just Wing It.

There are also circles cut from scraps gifted by blogging friends.

I'm still resisting the urge to begin sewing the squares together.

We'll see how that plays out over the next month.

Moments in Time (Blocks 72 - 83)

This week's circle fabrics came from

my scrappy pillow project

and excess backing trimmed from

the latest quilts to return home

after being long arm quilted.

(I especially love that "Pixar" lamp

from a Michael Miller mid-century modern backing)

The speckled blue in the upper left hand corner

is a fabric I've hoarded ever since making

Thirty Years Later 

The khaki leaf was deliberately paired with the black on white. 

It is Khaki Season here

but deep snow season for family and friends 

in many other areas of the U.S.

I'm at the half-way point now. 

(more or less)

I'm still enjoying the process

and have no plans to abandon this effort.

Moments in Time (Blocks 49-71)

A few at a time,

I've been cutting circles

from scraps and projects at hand.

I just hadn't taken time to stitch

those circles onto 

their background squares.

These photos include 22 new circles.

Did you notice the lobster in the first group?

Valerie in Nova Scotia tucked a strip of that lobster print

inside my Christmas card . . . 

That spring-y looking print with the little birds

was chosen in honor of our recent record-breaking temperatures.

There are circles representing pillow tops/backs, previous quilts,

scrappy strata/slabs, and even scrubs in this grouping.

I'm also pretty sure the eventual layout will involve

this kind of dark/light background approach.

Moments in Time (Blocks 42-48)

Block 42

This circle comes from an all-time favorite fabric

in honor of the hand-blown paperweights

I fondled at a local art gallery this week.

Block 43

This black-and-white print

reminds me of an op-art Christmas ornament

displayed on a contemporary-designs tree at the art gallery.

Block 44

This circle from an Australian print 

reminds me of another of the stylized 

Christmas ornaments at the art gallery.

A circle from my Sam-I-Am fabric HAD to be included.

This circle was cut from thrifted shirting scraps

shared with me by my friend Cherie.

Block 47

This paisley reminded me of a lyric fragment

from a carol heard this week.

And this circle was cut from fabric used 

in the border of Celebrations IV (finished quilt reveal)

and on the back of my Christmas Tree quilt.
