Young Man and his daddy drove 2.5 hours west so that they could experience full totality.
On the way, they stopped at a coffee shop for a dragon drawing session.
Once they arrived at Lyon College in Batesville, AR, YM was able to sit and listen to a physics/astronomy lecture.
This has to be one of my new favorite photos of him.
Elder son's photo - he said it was like having a light switch to go from daylight to darkness.
Once the sun returned, some of the college students helped those who had built model rockets launch them.
(the college had set up a full day's worth of activities so it was an awesome experience all around)
It was awesome -- until it came time to drive home.
The first couple of hours were fine but when they hit the West Memphis AR area leading to the bridge over the Mississippi River, what normally takes 20-25 minutes took three slow-moving hours.
We watched from our back yard.
97.7% totality meant it did not get fully dark here but while most of the birds fell silent the robins sang their evening song (normally happens at dusk), the air felt heavier and somehow expectant layered with an almost eerie quiet, the sky changed from brilliant blue to dull gray, and the temperature dropped by a few degrees.
It was a full-body experience even without total darkness.
The photo above shows the crescent-shaped shadows on our living room floor as the reduced light shone through our living room skylight.

What a wonderful experience for the family. Is that your son and DiL sitting next to LM? Isn't there another grandson?? Anyway, same traffic problems here in Michigan going from Toledo, OH to anywhere north. My cousin was stuck in it on their way back from Florida but they did get to see the eclipse while they were in OH. Lucky souls!! We saw a brief darkening under the gray skies here. It seems anytime there is a super interesting event, it's cloudy up here!! Still haven't seen the northern lights. Take care.
What a wonderful photo of YM and his look of intense interest and concentration! A memorable experience, for sure.
In Virginia, we were well off of the path but our sunlight briefly became sort of watery and weak.
