Contemplating and Looking Ahead

After a period of soul searching,
I have chosen my guiding word for 2020.

Previous guiding words have included
ENJOY, SMILE, MINDFUL,
and most recently SHOSHIN / WONDER.

I could write all sorts of words to explain why I chose LISTEN
but the short version is that I want to do a better job of it -
listening to myself AND listening to others.

I've already started gathering quotations to share
at the end of posts next year - those will serve as
ongoing reminders to stay the course
and keep me focused on the challenge.

(for the record, FOCUS was my runner up word)

Looking ahead  . . .

I want to spend less time stirring/planning
and more time actually stitching -
piecing AND quilting.

I want to stop obsessing about my paper trail
and spend that time making and doing.

I want to use the fabrics in my stash
instead of impulsively acquiring more.

I want to savor the process instead of
fretting so much about whether or not
my chosen outcome is the "perfect" one.

I intend to keep sharing what I make
here on the blog and spend less time
watching what others do on Instagram.

I want to spend more time reading the books I've purchased.

(hard copies have returned to favored status
over digital books - simply because of screen time
and the easy access to online distractions)

I want to meet my own personal challenge
of making monthly quilts for our kitchen table -
resisting the urge to get too fancy and
focusing instead on colorful and functional.

I've set a personal goal of making five
24" x 24" quilts for the GREEN challenge
to be shared during the annual November
Davies Manor Quilt and Fiber Arts Show -
each of the five showcasing a different aspect
of my process / style.

And yes, I'm also planning to
share their making here on the blog,
unlike some of the participants
who choose to work in secret.

Most of all,
when I assemble a fabric pull like the ones
shared in this post, I want to honor my
scrappy, colorful, liberated, eclectic nature,
staying open to new ideas and changes of direction.

. . . including being influenced by my studio squirrels!

(in their honor,
I have a 2020 studio calendar
with silly photos of squirrels
ready to hang up come January 1st)

* * *

With all of the above shared for the record,
these wise words from Calvin and Hobbes
will now be my focus for the rest of the year.

Wishing each of you comfort and joy.

See you again in the new year.

I enjoyed your post. Lots of eye candy, oh my! I like how you displayed it. One piece really stuck out to me in the orange stacks, second from the bottom left stack. I hope you get to use that this year. It reminds me of fabric from the 70's LOL. I am hoping that on the first of each month that you share your calendar squirrel. Sometimes cartoon characters have a lot of wisdom. Happy Holidays enjoying what is most important to you.

Good word, Julie! You have done some lovely fabric pulls for the coming year. My question is how you are going to... "savor the process instead of fretting so much about whether or not my chosen outcome is the "perfect" one." It seems to conflict with how you typically work... Or is that just the squirrels taking over your sewing room?!?! :P
Best of luck on a productive and oh SEW enjoyable 2020!!!

Great choice for your 2020 word; I am still debating on mine...I am continuing on my journey to use what's on my shelves...and to finish up those WIPs ...hugs, Julierose

Well spoken - sounds like you're already listening to your heart. Love those fabric palettes! Best wishes for a happy holiday season.

I like your plan. You have such beautiful ideas and beautiful fabrics, just start sewing!! I agree that we spend too much time seeing what others are doing rather than sewing the ideas that we have already visualized.

Wonderful post! And Listening is a great one. Your finding quotes for your word is a great idea. I will have to do that. I choose a word for the year - 2020 word is Balance. My goals for the year is to have more balance in my days - work, play, rest, health, and mindfulness/spiritual. More balance will make life better for me. I am also planning to do some more planning for 2020 quilt projects. Choosing patterns and doing fabric pulls, so they're ready to go when I'm ready to cut/sew. Enjoy this holiday season. Looking forward to your 2020 posts.

I know there is a reason I just love you so much! Your words today are like chapstick on a bitter cold day- soothing and healing. I want to do more, spin wheels less. Fret less, sew more, quilt more, share more. Thank you for your wonderful post!

Savoring the process is a hard one for me. I'm always in a hurry to start the next thing or check something off the list. As, I was hand quilting this morning, I slowed down to just enjoy the process - so soothing. Your fabric pulls are always so fun to see

Listen is a perfect word to "focus" on for the new year. I have several friends who NEED to talk about the terrible things that are happening in their life. It is hard to just listen and not comment about myself. I am getting better at it. Just being aware makes it easier.
Have fun this year. >^..^<

That is a great word, and I love all of your goals. I wish you he best with them. I haven't chosen my word yet, but did write some goals. I should have read yours first! Your fabric pulls are beautiful too.

"I want to honor my scrappy, colorful, liberated, eclectic nature, staying open to new ideas and changes of direction." Sounds to me like you want to make friends with the squirrels that show up in your studio! There are some mouth-watering pulls featured in this post. ;-)

I love everything about this post! Definitely gives me a lot of food for thought too. Love your colorful blog, and the fact that you do share what you are thinking and/or working on. I'm so glad you still choose to blog.

Thanks, Kay - you are a no-reply blogger so I can't respond directly to you (unless you send me an email at julie dot sefton dot info so I can capture your email info. Balance is also a terrific word. Good luck!!

Nancy - you, too, are a no-reply blogger so I can't respond directly to you. It is indeed hard to listen carefully without over-inserting ourselves. But it is so worth the effort when we can pull it off.

Great post Julie, I like your way forward for the next year! The colour of your fabric pulls are tremendous, they're getting my creative juices flowing just gazing at them!

So many good things to think about in this post and much of it resonates with me quite a bit. Love following along with your intentional and your squirrel quilting too. It's all good from this end.:)

After watching you over the last couple of years, I can say that your our work is surprising at times, always fresh and exciting and definitely inspirational. One thing I won't say is this - Julie, you need to spend more time actually stitching. Because in my opinion you are already supremely prolific :-) Have a great year full of creativity, joy and peace.

I seem to have acquired a sewing room of squirrels, also. Do you want some back? I also have chosen a word for the year: FINISH. Somewhere over the years I have developed a bad habit of never finishing anything. I have 47 UFO's and I promised myself I would finish this year, either by doing them myself, recycling, or just giving them away. Thank you for your efforts to keep us happily informed and keep feeding the squirrels!

Quiltdivajulie said...

Hi, Roxana - since you are a no-reply blogger, I must respond here. No thank you for your kind offer of more squirrels (LOL). Finish is a fabulous word - best of luck!!
