RSC Sea Green, Etc. - Part 1

The RSC color for this month is Sea Green.

I don't have any sea green scraps
so I pulled out my teals,
aquas, and turquoises.

Some of them turned into
this 18" x 24" (ish) slab.

Another group turned into this slab.

I found these leftover quarter circles from
the bulls eye blocks used in last year's
Old MacDonald Mystery Sampler
(I named my version Rise and Roost)
and used them to create a third slab.

Front - placemat 1

I used two of the slabs to create the first
reversible placemat for what will be a set of six.

Max and I quilted this using
Barb's Double Baptist Fan stencil.
(link in my sidebar)

Back - placemat 1

I marked it using a water soluble marker.

I ended up soaking the whole thing in water
to remove the markings.

Front - placemat 2

Last month's purple slab was paired
with the second teal slab.

I used the same stencil
but marked this one using Pounce.

Back - placemat 2

I first used steam from my iron
to remove the Pounced-on markings.

To remove the last traces of powder
I ended up soaking this one in water, too.

( I've tried the Pounce pad several times now
with the same kind of frustrating results . . . )

After both placemats air dried overnight,
I took this low-light photo
to show the wonderful texture.

The quilted slabs were then trimmed to 14" x 20"

(my current thinking for binding is a black-white stripe
but I'll wait until all six placemats are done
before I make a final decision)

Love the slabs and the colors. I never make placemats for the same reason I never did knit socks- the use they get slops them up quick. I love yours, but would be nervous to eat on them and make them a mess. The slabs would look great in a quilt also. Such rich colors.

These are great, Julie! Placemats are fun because you can really go to town on the quilting without having to wrestle a whole quilt through the machine. I really like that double Baptist fan. So interesting how simply echoing the line makes it look extra fancy.

I am leaving my email address because it has been pointed out to me that I am a "no reply" blogger. I am not too good at this blog thing, but I will change that as soon as I figure out how to do it!

They're gorgeous! But I'd end up hanging them on the wall - they're way too pretty to drip gravy on...

Placemats are a super slab idea, just keep making them bigger! What a fast a pretty way to make them. Sorry about the marking problems, but the quilting is lovely.

Who would have thought putting the words slabs and quilting together could create pools of colors. Sorry the marking was such a hassle. I've never come across the perfect solution yet.

I always love seeing all the saturated color you love to use! BTW, thanks for the link you shared about dealing with political stress on Deb's blog. I had already come to that conclusion, but it's nice to not feel alone!

That's the thing about kids: they get it, then you get it! I hope you feel better soon. I love the texture photo of your quilting.

Get over your virus soon - it seems so many people have it. I am sure I’ll remain healthy until the day before we decide to take a vacation. Anyway, I LOVE your saturated blocks and am anxious to see the finished placemats!

I always love seeing your wonderful slab blocks - such great shades of color to make a pretty block. The texture from that patter is wonderful. Hope you are feeling better soon (don't you wish he had missed that sharing day in kindergarten?)

Very nice baptist fans! And I love those dark teal slabs. My favorite is the one on the back of place-mat one!
