Young Man's Visit

This happened within the first five minutes after his arrival.

I was happy to see him with the box of colored pencils instead of the usual markers.

After dinner trip to the young reader section of the bookstore.

And yes, it is all dragons all the time now.

Water dragons, Ice dragons, and Fire dragons are his favorites to draw.  He was so excited by this book!

He also discovered this large coffee table book in the "clearance" section and there was no way it was staying behind.

"Mee Mah - I might not read all the words right now but I really want to study the pictures."

Who can argue with that logic?

This is one of the dragon coloring sheets that he finished.

There was also a Sunday afternoon alumni egg hunt on the campus where his parents went to college (that's YM in the bright red sweatshirt).

And an after dinner parking lot jaunt with Uncle A's remote control Mario cars.

Saturday he watched a video on his iPad from his You Tube Kids channel and asked me if we could do that.

I had paints and brushes but we needed a quick trip to Hobby Lobby to get a bundle of 11 x 14 canvases (what a fun adventure to shop with a curious child).

The color palette was his choice (he has a definite preference for warm colors) and he did 90% of the work.

(I squeezed paint dots onto the blank canvas at his direction and handled the heat drying tool between steps)

I love that he knows how to watch and then do "it" his way.

He was so happy and proud of his “masterpiece” that we made a Sunday trip to Michael's to find a frame.

(We had him sign and date the back edge of the canvas because "an artist should always sign their work.”)

After taking him to school Monday morning I dropped his things off at his house, including his painting carefully wrapped in paper to protect it from "getting scratched" (his words).

We are so very grateful we get to share and enjoy weekends like this one . . .

p.s. I am seriously considering another name change from Young Man to Long Legs.  He is taller every time we see him!

My grandson is also into dragons right now. I've made note of that "How to draw" title since is birthday is in July.

I noticed how tall he's gotten. Glad you enjoyed an artsy visit, Julie! I'm amazed by the level of detail in his work. Kudos to the budding artist!

What a fun visit! I have art hanging in my home that my children drew when they were children. At Christmas, the children still use the same placemats they made for Christmas when they were in kindergarten. Our grandchildren always enjoy viewing their parent's artwork. At least you have good ideas of what to give as gifts for birthdays.

What a wonderful time you and YMLL had and am so glad he's so creative so you two can play together! How proud he must be to have his new creation framed and ready to hang!

When YMLL is older, there is a wonderful book we got for our artistic teenaged son that is titled "How to Think Like Leonardo Da Vinci" by Michael Gelb and there are newer versions now, including a workbook. This is one book that DS1 still has nearly 30 years later.

Hugs!
