As I pondered how to best use
the scrappy segments and strata
pieced from my light neutral crumbs,
I remembered the second of my
2016 Quilts Madder projects.
I used the strips of 2.5, 3.5, and 5" squares
to create borders for the not-quite-big-enough top
bringing the updated top into the
48" x 60" lap quilt range.
I had already prepared a back for Quilts Madder 2
and to enlarge it, I cut open the long center seam
and inserted a 13" wide scrappy strip of neutrals.
Marvelously interesting and just the right size.
Now the top and the back are ready to be sandwiched
and quilted into a lovely winter lap quilt.
Hoping to get this finished before month's end
but as long is it is ready for December,
it's all good.

You have a beauty here with an envious collection of neutrals! That centre chequerboard draws us right into the quilt.
there is a richness to use of neutrals only.
You did a fantastic job with your neutrals. Who would ever know they were just leftovers?
Enjoyed seeing your process today and the quote that went with it.
I love seeing quilts with all neutrals but I don't usually have any luck making one. Yours are always beautiful.
What a great idea! It looks great!
Such a lovely quilt. It will be a so cosy this winter. It reminds me of my recent Chinese Coin Medallion but yours is much more effective. Love the checkerboard center.
Never enough neutrals. The reds make the whole thing so rich.
Oh! That will be a perfect December quilt!!
Very smart to border your madder with these lovely neutrals! This turned out wonderfully...very "shabby chic."
What an ingenious use of the neutrals. They really complete the look of the center with just the right proportions.
I agree with Sandra, that will be 'perfect in December'.
I like how one project gives ideas for another, thanks for sharing that.
Good quote too.
Knocking out scraps and a UFO in one fell swoop? AWESOME!!
Those neutrals are so beautiful, Julie! And I love this composition. So serene!
What a beautiful composition! Love the quote, too.
Love that neutral back fabric. Now that my piece is at the show committee I have time to finish up my water pieces. And then play again!
Never a big fan of tan/beige neutrals but mercy! you made me want to dig some out! I have quite a stash of gray/taupe neutrals that have just been waiting for the right project....You had me with the PINK checkerboard!!!!! Great job!!! Keep inspiring us!
