Making Progress

It all started when DH transferred custody
of this rolling cart and it moved from
his workshop into my design studio.

After that, there was a cascade
of one thing leading to the next . . .

We discovered that my studio trash can
fit perfectly in the top of the
previously-under-the-window
but-now-newly-homeless Ikea cart.

I really like that it is on wheels
and having two additional shelves
all in the same floorspace.

That's a win-win-win.

A few weeks ago I tried
putting my smallish solids stash
in the top two shelves of another Ikea cart
which was fine for looking at them
but not at all useful when it came to
 pulling the various colors in/out.

So . . .
I spent some time rearranging more things
so I could store the solids/peppered cottons
on this small shelf unit -
which left that Ikea cart empty.

(confession - there are now 3 cream-color Ikea carts
in the design studio plus the original blue-green one
from  my sister's MI store beside Max)

Hmm - how best to use that newly emptied cart?

Wanda posted a while back about
storing her die cutter dies in a rolling cart.

What a good idea!

Mine are now out in the open
and right beside my die cutter
which is SO much better than
having them across the room,
stored flat, and hidden inside drawers.

. . . and there are two empty shelves
just waiting to be used.

I spent a couple of hours
rearranging and tidying my yardage.

I've been using this storage system
for several years and absolutely love it.

(it took nearly a month to get it all
sorted and folded the first time around,
but that effort continues to pay off)

Pieces larger than 1/2 yard but less than 3 yards
were first folded selvage to selvage.

They were then wrapped/folded
around my 6" x 24" ruler before being
folded in half to stack neatly on the shelf.

(It is hard to stay in a bad mood
when you stand in front of this bookshelf)

Glancing over at the design wall,
I really need to do some quilting
and clearly I've been
craving the colors of spring.

Finally, I'm happy to share a finish.

All nine pillowcases are done
and on the way to their new owners.

These first three are for a boy who loves
pirates and the color blue.

These are for a little girl who loves
pinks, purples, and Curious George.

And these are for a little boy who loves
trucks, tractors, and Curious George.

Nice to get the studio tailered to your needs! Mine needs a re-think; I cant move any of the furniture but need to sort out how and where I store things so it works better. Those pillowcases will make 3 little people very happy!

Great organization. I am still trying to find a place for my dies and they are on my cutting table now. I bought some squarish storage containers at the dollar store today for my 2 1/2" squares, some progress. Thanks for sharing!

Great organization equals more productive sewing time. I've been slowly folding fabrics like you, but not making much head way. Your fabric shelf looks terrific.

Isn't it a treat to have a tidy studio. Although mine doesn't seem to stay that way long.

Your design wall is filled with quilty goodness!! Thanks for sharing that pillowcase tutorial. I have never gotten the hang of that other popular method. This seems simpler.

Your studio looks so spacious and organized! I know, it's an on-going process. I'm just getting started on making mine more workable. It's gotten too crowded/messy. It's a big job!

The pillowcases are cute and should make the kids very happy!

I love storage on wheels. When I change my mind about the arrangement I can move things without asking for help. I really like my dies in the rolling cart.

It all looks beautiful and so organized! Love the pillowcases : I did ones a few years back for the grands at Christmas and they were a huge hit. I keep thinking that I should do special ones at their birthdays then I forget about it. By the way thanks for that link on my blog about surviving this so-far-very-exhausting-president :)

Okay, the first cart on wheels and your bookcase are to die for. You've also reminded me I need to make some more pillowcases! I made some for me last week but want to make them for Christmas/Birthday presents during the year. Ugh, not enough time in the day!thanks. mary in Az.
