With or Without ??

I've finished making the 12 blocks for No Ugly Flowers.

I'm making my version smaller than the
pattern in Sujata's Cultural Fusion Quilts.

Center of the pink block . . .

Several block centers . . .

Another block's center.

Given the name of the quilt project,
I've been taking photos of floral bouquets lately.

This one features colored daisies . . .

. . . which led to this version  featuring fussy cuts
from a Westminster print over each block's center.

(I was thinking about textured edges/raw edge appliqué)

Here's the deep red block . . .

And the multi-tonal orange block . . .

And the polka dotted turquoise block.

* * *

Which one do you prefer and why?

In case it might affect your opinion,
these are the fabrics I'll piece together
for the back and scrappy binding.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

I do hope you go with the fussy cut flower centre - I really, really love these. The quilt will be super without the addition of the centre flowers but with them it goes up another notch. The flowers will not look out of place at all with your backing and binding fabrics because of the orange red outer ring and slender inner ring of the fussy cut. Just my thoughts.

I'm thinking that the fussy cut centers unify the blocks but I'm not sure I understand your question.
Would love to see your other idea of textured raw edges on the flower centers ... before I give my opinion of centers/no centers. Love this quilt!

I like the flower centers, too. Their detail draws viewers in. And having started some of these blocks, I know applique centers help reduce the seam bulk where all the petals meet. Love your backing and binding choices.

Without, without, without, WITHOUT!!! No Question. The dark flower centers attract your eye like bullseyes, dragging attention AWAY from the wonderful contrast of the colors and the black and white. It's like you're trying to have your cake and eat it too. What kind of a quilt is this anyway? Without the centers the quilt is a strong graphic. With the centers it's something a lot more predictable, and to me, boring. I also think the centers you've selected are way too dark.

without. please.
hugs,
Lynne

Without. The flower centers demand my attention like a bullseye and that's a lot of bullseyes. I'd prefer to enjoy the wonderful piecing without the distraction. If, and it's a big if, I were to place the flower centers I would use only one of them (off centered of course.)
But that's just me...and this is your quilt. :)

Oh Lynne! Seems we were typing at the same time! Too funny!

I agree with Lynne and Valerie - no flowers...too dark.

The quilt is so fresh and exciting without the flowers. I vote no flowers.

Love them without. The blocks shine without, become back ground with.

Each way has its strengths. Without the center flowers, the quilt is more graphic and the flowers are somewhat more abstract. With the center flowers, each square looks more like a flower. What story do you want to tell?

I like the idea of the flower centers but with brighter flowers!!

I love these blocks! They look like fireworks to me. While I like the idea of the flower centers, I would go without. They don't need that extra element at all. If you really need a center, how about something small and bright? Maybe a contrasting free-form circle. Even colorful buttons after quilting would work.

Looks wonderful so far! Have fun with the finishing!

I much prefer it without the flower centers. The flowers make you look at them and not notice the great black/white and color contrasting blocks.

I like the clean lines of the "without". I am not sure all the centers go with all the blocks. But take that with a grain of salt as i am the person who still has problems combining patterned fabrics in one piece.

If these are the only 2 options I prefer without. I think I might like a center but this particular flower is too dark.....IMHO.

I like the idea of the flower center, but it's all I see when I look at that version, not the beautiful block beneath. So I would say without. Maybe save the idea for another project?

I like both of them. You could make another quilt.

Since you're asking for opinions.....I really like the blocks with all their swirly goodness without the centers. I find the centers very distracting. But it's not my quilt......

I agree with Lynne. Without the flower centers! I find them distracting, and they "muddy the waters" of what I think you're trying to say with this quilt. The centers are too dark and distracting. "KISS", right?

Without :-) I like the fresh colors of your blocks. I chose to applique squares and in different colors for the very same reason... being the same fussy cut flowers, they take away all the attention from the petals.

I must say i like the blocks without the center. The two don't seem to match. Can't wait to see what you decide.
